Big-scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) are small fish, with the head bigger than the body, highly developed eyes and forked caudal fin. The body is marked by some tiny dots blacks, while the sides are crossed by a characteristic bright silvery band. It breeds from April to September. It is a fundamental connection in the food chain of lagoons and estuary.
