IMBARCAZIONI - GILIA FOR ALL - Park Santa Gilla

Direkt zum Seiteninhalt
The typical boats used in Santa Gilla are called “Cius”, wooden boats with flat bottom, ideal for shallow, calm waters of the lagoon, which thanks to the oars can get away or closer to the earth, to nets, or to other vessels. It is a boat built by expert hands according to ancient techniques, jealously guarded and handed down orally from father to son. Each Cius can take on board up to eight people with their equipment and networks, able to move deftly within the lagoon. Other watercraft used in this lagoon were barges, floating of rectangular shape made of wood or metal without engines. There were also the "maoni" used to carry the salt from the salt-works to the port of Cagliari.
Nowadays, the large boats cannot anymore sail inside the lagoon, but it will be easy to see some fishermen working on the typical “Cius”. There are still visible some remnants of the old piers and old sunken ships which reveal its ancient bustling period.
