CULTURAL INFORMATION
Santa Gilla, called in the past Igia, has a very ancient history. For its abundance of fish and for its strategic position, it become important since the Phoenicians which settled firstly along its banks, thanks to the fact to be easily defensible from attacks coming both from land and from sea. Abandoned for a short period in favor of Cagliari, during IX century it became the main center of the area, a safe haven from the attack of the Saracens, and home to the residence of the judge, the archbishop and all administrative activities of the kingdom of the Giudicato di Cagliari. Destroyed by the Pisans in 1258 in order to end the kingdom of Cagliari, the lagoon hosted many fish farms and since 1920, thanks to the intuition of the engineer Luigi Contivecchi, it has been used to extract of salt in an industrial system.
