GILIACQUAS
Giliacquas is located in the municipality of Elmas, few kilometers from Cagliari. Located on the northern part of the lagoon of Santa Gilla, Giliacquas is part of the park Santa Gilla, one of the most important wetlands in Europe, recognized Special Protection Area (SPA) from European Union and awarded wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention.
It is exactly on the banks of this lagoon which started the history of this area. The strategic position has indeed attracted many civilizations, probably starting as early as 4000 BC. It have been found from the Phoenician and the Punic period hundreds of terracotta figures and amphorae handles with seals stamped, showing the importance of this site for trade.
The toponym of Elmas could come from the Roman age when the slaves worked in the "mansio", and which subsequently during the Aragonese domination became "el Mas (o)". Today Elmas has approximately 9.000 inhabitants and in its territory is situated the most important airport in Sardinia.
