FOCE DEL FIUME S. LUCIA
The Rio Santa Lucia is a waterway with a torrential style that collects the waters of the eastern slopes of the mountains of Sulcis. The river’s source is in the heart of the mountains of the Sulcis. The river flows for the its first part under the name of Gutturu Mannu, crossing the homonymic gorge, a narrow valley, and then it continues flowing to the alluvial plain of Capoterra, in the locality Santa Lucia. Two tributaries, the rio Guttureddu and the Gutturu Mannu, flow into the river under the name of Rio Saint Lucia and continues until it flows into the pond of Capoterra, the southernmost lagoons of this wetland.
Although the water is synonymous of life, it can cause serious damage. This area has been the scene of devastating floods, because of violent storms that afflict Sardinia and especially this location. During the storms of 2008, five million m³ of water and a huge mass of debris were violently dragged downstream: boulders, mud and tree trunks, made overflowing the river banks, portions of towns flooded and destroying bridges and roads in the surrounding municipalities. The devastation of that flood and the data of rainfall recorded could be compared to that caused by hurricane. ranked among the most serious in its history, such as the Hurricane Katrina that afflicted the United States in 2005.
