POGGIO DEI PINI
Welcome to Poggio dei Pini! Officially founded the 27July 1966, inspired by the idea of creating a residential area surrounded by nature. Before then, they used to go there only to reach the church of Santa Barbara (XII century), the Hermitage of St. Jerome (XVII century), and to work at the farm “Azienda Agricola Saggianti”, between the countryside of Capoterra and the foothills of the Sulcis. Characterised by the presence of forests, orchards, two artificial lakes and gentle slope, it is perfect oriented to East. It overlooks to Cagliari, the Gulf of Angels, the Campidano plain and the largest wetland of Sardinia (SCI and SPA area "Lagoon of S. Gilla"). From the north, it is separated from the WWF Reserve and Area SCI-SPA "Monte Arcosu" by the valley of Gutturu Mannu and by the rich red slopes. Here, indeed, it had been founded the Mine of San Leone, exploited since 1863 and which encouraged the first railways. Inaugurated the 2nd April 1865, with the first locomotive in Sardinia, the train reached the mouth of the Santa Lucia river, in the pond of Capoterra.
Our lands, teeming worlds full of life, host an extraordinary variety of species of animal and plant, of which, very often, we underestimate the importance or even ignore the existence. The lakes of Poggio dei Pini, created in the last century, initially as water supply for agricultural use and also later as a firefighting water tank, has proved an ideal habitat for coots, ducks, grey herons, geese, ducks and ... swans. Swans, unlike to the others, have recently been introduced by man, offering a rare lovely view in our latitude. Here it have, indeed, been recorded their further south nesting across Europe. Along the lake, where turtles and fishes proliferate too, the birds are get used to the presence of people which generously feed them: that it has made the shores one of the most beautiful spots to relax and start to love birdwatching.
