SALINE
Since the twenties the area of the salt-works has been the most important industrial area of Cagliari. Close to this area there is also the channel port, an industrial port, which intend to include the island in the wider Mediterranean trades.
After the end of World War I, on the banks of the lagoon were built several industries, such as cement factory, the thermal power station. Moreover in the same period, the engineer Luigi Contivecchi started the reclamation of the central part of the lagoon in order to realize the salt-works, which have still been working. The development of industries increased the exploitation of the lagoon waters, which required, in way to easily transport goods and products, to dredge an internal channel.
In the Contivecchi saltworks, the collected salt were loaded onto trucks and transported to the small port of San Pietro, which was located near the salting tanks. Then, the salt was loaded on wooden or iron barges in order to reach the Port of Cagliari, and subsequently taken on board of merchant ships in order to be exported. These boats, called in Sardinian language "maone",were able to carry several tons of salt. Nowadays, the large boats cannot anymore sail inside the lagoon, but it will be easy to see some fishermen working on the typical “Cius”. There are still visible some remnants of the old piers and old sunken ships which reveal its ancient bustling period.
