GEOLOGICAL TRAIL
The lagoon of Santa Gilla, characterized by brackish water, is a coastal basin, separated from the sea by a strip of land interrupted only in few points that allows the passage of the salt water during the high tides, which mingle the freshwater of Santa Lucia river, and in this section also of Flumini Mannu River, the Riu Cixerri and other small rivers. The Flumini Mannu is the most important river in the south of Sardinia, which has its source in the hills of Sarcidano and flowing along the plain of Campidano receives several tributaries. The Cixerri has its source in the northern slope of Sulcis and runs almost perpendicular to the west coast. The rivers carry debris that pour into the lagoon, whose surface is part of the Campidano trench, originated in the Quaternary.
The geological trail, through installations and descriptions, allows you to understand the geological nature of the mountain range that surrounds the area of Capoterra. Supported by the position of the panels, you can read and carefully observe the mountains mentioned, and to dip into an outdoors “geological museum". A time travel which reveals the geological formation of this area, suitable path for all inquiring minds.
