The adults of Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus) are 33-36 cm long and their long pink legs can reach 30 cm in length. They have a long thin blackish bill. The upper parts of the body are black which contrast with the bottom parts that are bright white. It’s easy to distinguish the females from the males by their brown back. They eat mainly insects and shellfish that are directly collected from the sand and water.
From April, the male starts the courtship display with very elegant dances. From late April to early June, the female lays, 3-4 eggs, yellow-green, spotted dark brown. The rearing of offspring is done by both parents. The females of the black-winged stilt, in case of a threat of the nest by a predator, simulate to have a broken wing, in order to distract attention from the offspring.
