The Coot (Fulica) have an almost completely black plumage and are easy to see, they swim in open water rather than hide in the undergrowth. They have beaks colored, a prominent frontal shields, and most have the white under tail. They have long lobed toes and strong legs adapted for walking and running vigorously. They are omnivores, they eat mostly vegetables, but also small animals and eggs.
